The Garden of Good and Evil
Stunning trades, shotgun marriages and a season on the brink of greatness. After a decade of dysfunction and delusion, Katie Baker is ready to commit to the Knicks again.

t was the hour before Game 4 of the New York Knicks’ first-round playoff series against the Celtics, and Walt “Clyde” Frazier was loitering in the tunnel connecting the Madison Square Garden court to the underworld of the arena. Typically by now, Clyde would be on the other side of the court, perched on his MSG Network broadcast stool, but the day’s contest was being broadcast nationally on ABC. And so the man forever dressed as if it were Easter Sunday found himself with the actual holiday off.
“I haven’t stopped smiling all day,” he said, sounding like any other working stiff on vacation, particularly one who has been at the job, as he has, for 22 years. (He would later watch from courtside, seated next to actor Zach Galifianakis.)
The Knicks trailed 3-0 in the series after two oh-so-close ones in Boston and a dreadful clunker two nights earlier at MSG, the first NBA playoff game at the Garden in seven years. I asked Clyde for his Game 4 prediction.
“I don’t know, man,” he said, wincing at an internal memory. It pained me to see. “I don’t know. I was so optimistic for Game 3 …”
I told him I had actually been pessimistic for that game. “If it makes you feel any better,” I said, “I have a good feeling about today.” “So then you’re more like … masochistic!” he said, smiling.

Knicks – Celtics Notes

Last night's Knicks – Celtics game was really entertaining, two great teams. Amar'e was next level and totally amazing, doing everything when it mattered including a key block down the stretch. Felton was also a top talent, with clean setups as well as solid drives to the rim. Boston's big three were bigger than usual. Pierce's victory lap and bowing to the booing crowd at the end of the game were over the top, but he has played the Knicks tough ever since him and Q. Rich. got into this mano-a-mano battle back in the Isiah days. Your man Ray was a silent assassin as usual and KG got every important rebound. Nate and Big Baby looked terrific for Boston while the rest of our Knicks were a little suspect. The whole experience made me realize that one of Jeff Van Gundy's quotes during the game was spot on, while talking about who was available to trade for Carmelo, JVG said something like 'trade them all' and I buy it because I do not think we have enough to compete with the likes of the Celtics. Watching Boston's big three close out that game made me realize that all the quality players in the world will not help us in the same way as one transcendental talent, a la Carmelo Anthony. Here are my points:
- We are not going to get that much better with this roster: 8 wins in a row is monumental and they were playing bad teams with a fully healthy roster
- Danilo was all over the map, he missed 3 free throws in a row and then blew up in the second half for 20 points, this is his second real season and while he is real amazing I see him as a sort of Robert Horry rather than a consistent 20 point a game scored
- Landry Fields was over whelmed by Paul Pierce again and again, I do not see him getting faster as the years go by
- Wilson Chandler is the one guy I would try to keep because he has always performed well, continues to get better, and perfectly fits into any team with his low maintenance personality. Having said that, you have to trade talent for talent and I do not think he is untouchable.

Red AF25s, Red Nets, Red China
At the KnicksNets game, or should I say NetsKnicks game, I managed to sit next to a nice fellow who had traveled from China to cheer for Yi (and Nate Robinson (but we wont go into that)) and spend New Years in New York. It was cool, he had good energy and was knowledgeable about lots of stuff including sneakers.
